From A Curious Herbal, Vol. II, by Elizabeth Blackwell:
“From 1737 to 1739, Elizabeth Blackwell studied important medicinal plants in London’s Chelsea Physic Garden, some of which were from the New World. She drew from live specimens in unprecedented detail, engraved the drawings on copper plates and hand-colored 500 images in all. The Society of Apothecaries, founders of the Garden, helped support her work as did several prominent doctors in the
Royal College of Physicians. Blackwell also managed the publication of a two-volume reference work, a
masterful achievement for a woman at that time.”
